  • Abstract: The International Desktop Grid Federation (IDGF) is set up to be a technology agnostic community of persons and organisations interested in Desktop Grids. The presentation will concentrate on the services the IDGF provides for its members.

        14:20 - 14:40 Robert Lovas: The IDGF Road Map

  • Abstract: The DEGISCO project  has released the 2nd version of a Desktop Grids for eScience Road Map in July, 2011. The document, produced for the International Desktop Grid Federation (IDGF) is comprised of two parts. The first part constitutes a bird view of all the relevant topics to be considered when setting up a Desktop Grid infrastructure. This management part is addressed to political stakeholders and the general public. The second part offers a detailedand step-by-step description in five chapters of all the challenges and issues to be solved including relevant links to background information and practical examples. This technical part is aimed at Desktop Grid operators, scientific users, the academic user community, legal experts, and volunteer computing organisations.

         15:50 - 16:05 Matthias Keller: IDGF services for UNICORE communities

  • Abstract: Research communities from high energy physics to humanities utilize grid infrastructures to support and accelerate their research. Their computations can be executed by different grid technologies: Grids of cluster systems, like the German D-Grid, grids of supercomputers, like the Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications (DEISA), or desktop grids consolidated in the International Desktop Grid Federation (IDGF). UNICORE is one of the three grid middleware environments supported by the European Middleware Initiative (EMI) for managing a set of cluster or supercomputers, but desktop grids are currently unsupported. This work fills this gap enabling UNICORE to support all three kinds of grid technologies of the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI). This unified interface enables European scientists to access web services, portals, and applications on all grid technologies in the same way.

         16:20 - 16:35 Stephen Winter: Experiences with the University of Westminster Desktop Grid (S C Winter, T Kiss, G Terstyanszky, D Farkas, T Delaitre)

  • Abstract:  The Westminster Local Desktop Grid (WLDG) has been established for several years, and is currently used extensively in a range of high performance computing tasks by a range of scientific research groups. Typically, bio-scientists use WLDG to support in silico investigations of molecular interactions as a means of promoting new drug discovery. Experiences in the deployment of the WLDG system are described, together with the development of specific application workflows for particular user groups, which is based on the EDGeS Application Development Methodology (EADM). Application examples are shown, and the performances of these are discussed. The presentation concludes with lessons learned for improving the efficiency of application performance, and for managing the system.
