ABC@home is a project of volunteer computing in mathematics that aims to promote mathematics, and to shed light on the ABC conjecture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abc_conjecture). This conjecture is one of the main open problems in number theory. The project was initiated in 2006 by the Mathematical Institute of the Universiteit Leiden and kennislink.nl, a Dutch language popular science website.
Academia Sinica is a leading scientific organization in Taiwan. AS will be presented in the project through ASGC (www.twgrid.org), one of its institutes, established as a leading high performance computing and communication centre in Taiwan, which provides advanced services for Grid Computing. Since 2005, ASGC has formally become one of the 11 WLCG Tier-1 Centres (the only Tier-1 in Asia) providing services, coordination and support to HEP scientists worldwide. Based on these experiences, ASGC joined the EGEE and EUAsiaGrid projects extending grid services to many other fields such as Biomedical, Earth Science, and Digital Archives as well as disseminating grid services/applications to the Asia Pacific countries. Serving as the APROC (Asia Pacific Regional Operation Centre) and the Chair of APGridPMA, ASGC has deployed, certified and provided operations support to 29 resource centres Asia Pacific. Acting as the Asia Federation Coordinator in EGEE-II and Deputy Project Manager, ASGC not only provides WLCG/EGEE global grid operation and CA services, but also participates in WLCG/EGEE technology development. From 2008, ASGC also introduced the volunteer computing model and Desktop Grid computing environment to support scientific computing and regional collaborations.
Advanced Network Technologies (ANT) was established as a Swedish-Hungarian joint venture in 1990, now the SME is wholly owned by Hungarian private persons. ANT has been focusing on IT since the company was incorporated, covering product distribution, services, systems integration, and development. The client base primarily includes large and medium-sized corporations as well as educational institutions and public administration bodies. ANT offers and supports a wide range of products (among others) from NetApp or VMware (for virtualization solutions), and contributed to the creation of several cloud computing systems. ANT is one of the largest Hungarian distribution partners of Fujitsu Technology Solutions, awarded as "Select Expert". The company operates a proprietary services centre (both IaaS and PaaS). ANT has participated in several projects that aim to spread future technologies on the Hungarian market. The R&D activities of the company include security systems related efforts, and set up a novel business line concerning accredation service center for cloud providers. ANT regularly applies for funds (co-financed by the European Union) to enable these development efforts.
Agro-Know Technologies is a young start-up company that has a clear research focus on knowledge-intensive technology innovation for agriculture and rural development. Agro-Know develops systems and services for agricultural knowledge organization and delivery, using Semantic Web technologies and Web 2.0 tools. It also explores their deployment and testing in sectors such as education & training, commerce, and public administration. Agro-Know is following European and international standardization initiatives in relation to the agricultural data representation and storage, with involvement in fora such as the Agricultural Information Management Standards (AIMS) initiative of the Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).
Stichting AlmereGrid - Foundation AlmereGrid operates the first City Grid in the world. Currently it operates a service that enables citizens, SMEs and other organizations to donate unused computing cycles to scientific programmes. As the world's first, it especially addresses "early majority" people and organizations.
Many companies have signed a partner agreement with AlmereGrid. They contribute resources, such as systems, software or services, and participate in the developments. AlmereGrid partners include: SARA, Oracle, Rabobank, IBM, NWO/NCF, LogicaCMG, ALCA, Foundry, ALCA, Engage Technology.
AlmereGrid is working on a test for a Grid based back-up for SME's. Part of an SME's hard disk will be used by back-up for other SME's. Just as with more traditional Grids, security is paramount in this type of resource sharing. The test is part of a European IST project BEinGRID, Business Experiments in Grids.
Another innovative use of the City Grid that is in the planning phase, is to provide a "Grid based building assistent" for people who want to build their own home (about 25.000 in the coming years).
Atos is an international information technology services company. Its business is turning client vision into results through the application of consulting, systems integration and managed operations. The company's annual revenues are more than EUR 5.5 billion and it employs over 50,000 professionals in 40 countries. Atos has developed more than 200 R&D&I projects in the last 15 years (70 R&D&I ongoing projects in 2008). Atos is No. 5 as global R&D actor, No. 2 as industrial actor and No. 1 as global R&D leader in the Spanish R&D&I community. Atos is a founding member of the European Technology Platform NESSI (Networked European Software and Services Initiative) and member of ISI, eMobility, NanoMed, NEM, eSafety Forum, JTI Artemis; at Spanish level ATOS is member of 11 platforms (es.Internet, INES, and eSEC among them).
Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania is a modern institution which has gained a solid national and international reputation thanks to its achievements down through the decades. With 21 faculties, more than 45,500 students and with an experienced teaching staff of 1700, BBU is now an active participant in most of the European and American academic associations. BBU aims to promote and sustain the development of specific cultural components within the local, regional, national and international community, based on systematic and innovative knowledge, a permanent and innovative learning culture, multiculturalism and intercultural dialogue.
The Business Information Systems (BIS) department is part of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration and hosts 26 academic staff and 11 full-time PhD students. The expertise of the department includes various areas like collaborative systems, software engineering, information security, databases, e-commerce and e-business etc. The department has a long-term experience with running and managing research projects, being the most active entity in the faculty in participating to research initiatives. The research group lead by Gheorghe Cosmin Silaghi investigates resource management in untrusted distributed computing environments, tackling problems like sabotage tolerance and dependability in volunteer computing, service level agreement negotiation and business models in computational grids, resource aggregation in P2P systems etc.
The Centre of Public Administration's Information Technology is an IT institution at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME IK) that has strong research program in the areas related to grid and cloud computing. BME IK has significant experience in research and development infrastructure services in the filed of service grids. The centre was member of the EGEE-I, EGEE-II and EGEE-III projects. BME IK is a founding member of the Hungarian Grid Competence Centre (HGCC), which was established in 2003 in order to coordinate Grid activities in Hungary. BME IK is active member of the Hungarian NGI (National Grid Initiative).
Cardiff University (CU) is a publicly funded university that has a strong research programme in the areas related to EDGI, such as Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networking, and data analysis. The Distributed Collaborative Computing Research Group (Taylor) specialises in the use of distributed computing technologies for supporting collaboration. This includes the sharing and reuse of middleware and applications, the collaborative exploration of large data sets through visualisation, and problem-solving environments/portals for interfacing with distributed and collaborative resources. The group's research is both in the areas of P2P and Grid computing, with expertise in the use of the Grid in e-Science, with particular focus on specifying distributed scientific applications through P2P networks and the composition of Web services.
Charity Engine® is a not-for-profit volunteer computing grid, owned and operated by the Worldwide Computer Company Ltd, Manchester, UK (Company No. 6723910). Charity Engine harnesses surplus home PC resources to create the world's cheapest and most eco-friendly 'virtual supercomputer', rents it to science and industry, then splits
the proceeds 50-50 between its official charity partners and prize draws for the the volunteers.
The mission of the Citizen Cyberscience Centre is to: (1) Promote citizen cyberscience applications by targeting research on humanitarian and development issues as well as fundamental science, by coordinating collaborative projects between scientists from North and South. (2) Organise hands-on workshops for scientists in developing countries in order to spread know-how about citizen cyberscience and its benefits for their research. (3) Provide online educational material about the research challenges addressed by citizen cyberscience projects, encouraging greater public participation.
Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) is the main French research organisation and the largest in Europe, covering all scientific fields, from fundamental sciences to humanities. CNRS is one of the "founding fathers" of the Grid effort in Europe, having been associated with EU DataGrid and all EGEE programs, DEISA, COREGRID, etc.
The Institut des Grilles (IDG) of the CNRS was created on September 2007 to federate the French CNRS contributions to Grids deployment and Grids research, to reinforce interaction between computing science research and production infrastructures and to represent the CNRS in European projects. IDG offers to the users and to the scientific communities, an easy and transparent access to very powerful resources distributed on tens of sites. More than 15 CNRS laboratories from four scientific departments and two national institutes (IN2P3 and INSU) take part in the IDG.
E-Group delivers secure payment, workflow, document and transaction management solutions for large organizations. These applications generally require a high level of data and operational security, as well as extensive interfacing and real time data exchange. We have an extensive track record on integrating solutions with legacy systems, as well as complying with relevant internal standards and methodologies of large corporates and government organization. Through company innovation and our access to European R&D resources, E-Group is a recognized competence center in European identification and digital signature applications, as well as related technologies. We act as value add specialist or outsourcing partner for industry leading software vendors and system integrators, in selected technologies. The company's home market is Hungary and EU countries, but actively develops in overseas markets in Asia Pacific and US, with 50% of revenues coming from foreign markets. E-Group has today over 25 employees, project references cover 17 countries.
G.V. Kurdyumov Institute for Metal Physics (IMP) of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine has the long experience in the field of materials science, large volume of automatic image processing, simulation of material structure evolution, etc. It has been cooperated with leading companies in aerospace and automotive engineering, including British Aerospace (UK), Airbus UK Ltd, ETO Magnetic (Germany), etc. IMP has successful experience of participation in the international projects under the framework of European Union INTAS organisation (1999-2007) and under the framework of the intergovernmental R&D organisations (2007-2008). Now IMP takes part in organisation of the national Ukrainian GRID initiative, which started its activity this year. Our experience and qualification will be useful not only for the purposes of the project (usage of the vast numbers of Grid computing resources), but also for distribution of our ported GRID-enabled applications to large user community requiring this application, preferably a European wide user community, and more, for promotion of GRID idea for industrial applications in materials science, automotive and aerospace engineering. IMP is a subcontractor in the FP7 project EDGeS, that aims at connecting Desktop Grid and Service grids (EGEE) and developing a Grid application development service.
IMP has many years successful experience in dissemination of popular science and technology knowledge in printed media for the wide range of ages, education, and computer literacy. IMP (in partnership with local and international publishing houses) will negotiate, prepare, and publish the
entry-level and professional tutorials, guides, and other literature promoting e-Infrastructures, Grid- related technologies, and distributed computing.
HIAST is an educational establishment founded in 1983 in Damascus, Syria. It provides high standard education to undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students in different disciplines including Computer Science, Telecommunications, Electronic Systems, Mechatronics, and Aeronautics. It provides also Master and PhD degrees; a Master in "Material Science and Engineering" is running since two years, a new Master in Telecommunication has opened in 2010, and a Masters in "Information and Decision Support Systems", "Automation and Robotics" and "Optoelectronics" are planned for next years. Moreover, HIAST runs short course seminars and workshops to keep the staff and other interested parties up-to-date with technical developments worldwide. In addition to education, technological development has assumed a dominant role at HIAST. Since 1983 major projects have been carried out, leading to a large set of electronic and software products already marketed in Syria and abroad. HIAST conducted a national poject to test the solar panels fabricated or commercialized in Syria. Research laboratories at HIAST have successfully combined the efforts of researchers, experienced engineers, and graduate students to significantly boost the applied research programmes designed to strengthen the overall technological infrastructure in the country. The main research activities at HIAST are in the areas of Computer Science and Software, Communication, Electronics and Automatics, Mechanics, Material Science, Solar energy, Optoelectronics, Sensors, and Mathematics. The total number of HIAST staff is roughly 420 persons, including 60 research professionals, 120 engineers, 90 technicians, 50 administrative staff, and 100 others. HIAST has approximately 350 full-time students each year.
Holografika Ltd. is a private company (SME), founded in 1989. As an R&D company, Holografika has been focusing on real-time holography and other photonic technologies from the early 90s. Holografika, empowered by its strong connection to university research groups, follows a unique research path in 3D display technology, and was the first in realising a real 3D Light-Field Display system. Holografika research team has been actively involved in the continuous development of the theory and practice of 3D displays. Along with the technologies used in the successive 3D display generations the company has started to develop related 3D technologies, like 3D acquisition, 3D compression and possible 3D formats. In 1995, the R&D team developed the basic prototype of a 3D display, which showed wire frames in three dimensions with red laser beams. Holografika presented its 3D display technology first in 1997. The 3D monitor developed was a monochrome 21" monitor applying red laser beams and acousto-optic scanners to create moving 3D images on a flat holographic screen. At the end of 2001 Holografika demonstrated the working technology for moving, white light based, colour, 3D display prototype. In 2006, the prototype of a large-scale 3D display was presented.
In 2005 Holografika Ltd. was a recipient of Red Herring 100 Europe award, a selection of the 100 private companies in Europe and Israel that play a leading role in innovation and technology. In 2006 The World Economic Forum has announced Holografika as a Technology Pioneer. The company has also been nominated to the World Technology Award 2006 and The European 2007 ICT Prize. Holografika has won the Silver Prize of the Best Exhibit Award at the ICT Event in Lyon in 2008.
Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) is located in Wuhan, China. It ranks at the top of China's leading universities in comprehensive strength. It has 36 academic schools and departments covering eleven disciplines. Service Computing Technology and System Lab (SCTS) and Cluster and Grid Computing Lab (CGCL) is key research lab which is sponsored by Ministry of Education and Hubei Province. Currently there are more than 20 faculties working in SCTS/CGCL, most of them get PhD degree. CGCL/SCTS leads the ChinaGrid project and National 973 Basic Research Program ‘Basic Theory and Methodology of Virtualization Technology for Computing System’. In 2004, the How-U platform developed by CGCL/SCTS won the second prize in the Chinese National Networking Computing Competition. How-U is a P2P grid computing platform based on XtremWeb, CGCL/SCTS improved the back-end server with a load balancer, so How-U can support more applications on XtremWeb.
INRIA, Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique, the national institute for research in computer science and control, operating under the joint authority of the Ministries of Research and of Industry, is dedicated to fundamental and applied research in information and communication science and technology (ICST).
The Institute also plays a major role in technology transfer by fostering training through research, diffusion of scientific and technical information, development, as well as providing expert advice and participating in international programs. By playing a leading role in the scientific community in the field and being in close contact with industry, INRIA is a major participant in the development of ICST in France.
Throughout its six research units located in seven major regions, INRIA has a workforce of 3,200 persons, 2,400 of whom are scientists from INRIA or from INRIA's partner organizations such as CNRS (the French National Centre for Scientific Research), universities and leading engineering schools. They work in 120 joint research projects-teams. Many INRIA researchers are also professors who supervise around 800 doctoral students, their theses work contributing to INRIA research projects.
Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) or Bandung Insitute of Technology or Institute of Technology Bandung, was founded on March 2, 1959. The present ITB main campus is the site of earlier engineering schools in Indonesia. Although these institutions of higher learning had their own individual characteristics and missions, they left influence on developments leading to the establishment of ITB. In 1920, Technische Hogeschool (TH) was established in Bandung, which for a short time, in the middle forties, became Kogyo Daigaku. Not long after the birth of the Republic of Indonesia in 1945, the campus housed the Technical Faculty (including a Fine Arts Department) of Universitas Indonesia, with the head office in Jakarta. In the early fifties, a. Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, also part of Universitas Indonesia, was established on the campus. In 1959, the present lnstitut Teknologi Bandung was founded by the Indonesian government as an institution of higher learning of science, technology, and fine arts, with a mission of education, research, and service to the community. Government Decree No. 155/2000 pertaining to The Decision on ITB as Legal Enterprise (Badan Hukum) has opened a new path for ITB to become autonomous. The status of autonomy implies a freedom for the institution to manage its own bussiness in an effective and efficient way, and to be fully responsible for the planning and implementation of all program and activity, and the quality control for the attainment of its institutional objective. The institution has also freedom in deciding their measures and taking calculated risks in facing tight competition and intense pressures.
The Computer Center of Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP-CC) is one of the biggest computer centers of CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) institutes and aims at providing high throughput computing and massive storage solutions to various scientific research projects. IHEP-CC has been a pioneer in IT applied technologies in China since early 1970s. Researchers from IHEP-CC conduct research projects on distributed computing, cloud storage, massive storage system, database technologies, network security, etc.
IHEP-CC has been a pioneer in China in applied IT technologies and also participating widely in international collaborative projects. IHEP-CC serves as a WLCG Tier2 Site for both CMS and ATLAS, and also hosts a volunteer computing project CAS@home to harness distributed volunteer computing resources and help scientists from CAS with their computing needs.
The Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia (IIAP NAS RA) is a leading institution in computer science and information technologies, under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (www.sci.am). The main field of activities is the theoretical and applied investigations in the area of computer science and informational technologies. Since 1994, IIAP NAS RA responsible for Academic Scientific Research Computer Network of Armenia (ASNET-AM - www.asnet.am) unifies academic, scientific, research, educational, cultural and other organizations (more than 40 organizations), which are engaged in scientific and educational activity. IIAP NAS RA has been involved in coordinating Grid activities in Armenia for the past 8 years through a series of projects including framework programmes funded by EC and three phases of Projects funded by the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC - www.istc.ru). IIAP NAS RA coordinates the Armenian National Grid Initiative - ArmNGI (www.grid.am) with the participation of state governmental units (Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, State Committee of Science of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia), leading universities (State Engineering University of Armenia, Yerevan State University), research institutions (Yerevan Physics Institute) and an Armenian e-Science Foundation (Armenian CA). ArmNGI provides major core services to the users and consists of 6 Grid sites (about 500 cores). IIAP NAS RA is currently coordinating the nascent Armenian HPC initiative, and pilot state target project for HPC user communities' assessment in the country.
The Institute for System Dynamics and Control Theory of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (ISDCT SB RAS) was established in November, 1980 as the Irkutsk Computing Center of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Nowadays principal research areas of the institute are: scientific foundations of control theory and methods of control; mathematical methods and information technologies for investigation of dynamical systems. The Institute supports an integrated information-computing network of Irkutsk scientific-educational complex and a supercomputer center for shared use. ISDCT has many years of successful experience in the use of parallel and distributed computing for solving computationally hard problems. In collaboration with Institute for Systems Analysis of Russian Academy of Science a project SAT@home (http://sat.isa.ru/pdsat/) was created and now is being developed. The project uses a volunteer Desktop Grid based on BOINC platform to solve hard instances of Boolean Satisfiability problems that arise in various practical and scientific applications.
The Institute of Applied Mathematical Research of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IAMR) traces its history back to 1975. Research areas in IAMR include:
- game theory methods and approaches in applied mathematics;
- probabilistic and statistical methods;
- mathematical modeling of informational systems;
- mathematical models of new constructional materials;
- expert systems development;
- high-performance programming, mathematical modeling and analysis of high-performance systems.
The Institute consists of 5 laboratories. The staff numbers 37 persons including 29 research scientists. IAMR hosts the high-performance computing center of KRC RAS, which main areas of activity include Desktop Grids, Service Grids, Cloud computing and High-performance computing.
The Institute of Computational Technologies is a non-profit public research institute responsible for the maintenance and development of the infrastructure of the Regional Scientific Network of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Institute of Computational Technologies was established in 1990 at Novosibirsk Scientific Centre, Russia. The Institute has been founded and since then leaded by academician (full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences) Yuri Shokin. Currently academic staff of the Institute includes 1 full and 1 corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 17 Professors, and 29 Doctors of Philosophy (PhD). The Institute of Computational Technologies is now conducting both fundamental and applied research on the cutting edge of informational and computational technologies. Main directions of research are design and implementation of the informational-telecommunication technologies in decision making problems; mathematical modelling and computational algorithm development applied to a wide range of problems arising in mechanics of continuous media, physics and ecology. The Institute is a leading organization on informational-telecommunication technologies within the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS). Its staff has implemented and is now maintaining a regional SB RAS data exchange network. This network covers scientific centres in Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Tomsk, Krasnoyarsk and other cities in Siberia. The network serves more than 150 research, educational and social organizations with more than 40 000 active users. This network is the biggest academic network in Russia. Design and implementation of an Integrated Distributed Informational System of SB RAS has begun recently. The system will provide a unified access tool to various informational resources using the Grid technology.
The Institution of Russian Academy of Sciences Institute for Systems Analysis RAS (ISA RAS) is a unique autonomous research, advisory and consultative organization originally conceived, created and evolving as a multidisciplinary scientific entity bringing together experts in mathematics, information technologies, economics, management, biology and ecology, sociology and philosophy. By making use of the unique creative potential and forms of collaboration, experts in different areas of knowledge conduct fundamental and applied studies aimed largely at developing the theory and tools of systems analysis.
Fundamental studies of the Institute span a wide range of fundamental problems of systems analysis methodology, new information technologies, modeling of complex systems, artificial intelligence, decision making theory, control sciences, distributed systems and grid computing, macroeconomic
processes, territorial and production development.
The Catania Astrophysical Observatory is one of the twelve observatories which together with some former CNR Institutes, forms the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF). Laurea University of Applied Sciences has around 600 personnel and 8 000 students. Its international cooperation network includes 180 institutions around the world. Since 2007, the LaureaSID Networks laboratory located in Espoo, Finland has been doing applied R&D in the field of volunteer based desktop grids. These efforts ultimately led to the development of the world's largest volunteer based desktop grid for rendering 3D graphics: Renderfarm.fi. In 2011 the service was chosen to be one of the winners of the "E-science and Technology" category in the UN, Unesco and Internet Society backed World Summit Award. Laurea UAS is currently a member of the EU FP7 SCI-BUS (SCientific gateway Based User Support) project consortium, aiming - among other things - to further develop both the desktop grid based rendering of 3D graphics and any related user experience.

The Laboratory of Parallel and Distributed Systems of MTA SZTAKI Computer and Automation Research Institute plays a leading role in the research of cluster and grid technologies in Hungary.
MTA SZTAKI has significant experience in doing research and providing infrastructure services in the filed of service grids. MTA SZTAKI was a member of the European DataGrid project and was leader of the Grid Monitoring workpackage of the European GridLab project and the Automatic performance Analysis and Grid Computing WP of the European APART-2 project. MTA SZTAKI participated in the EGEE project as the Central-European Regional Training Centre of EGEE and contributed to the NA4, NA2 and SA1 WPs. It led the Grid Middleware WP of the SEE-GRID project. Currently, LPDS is a partner in the EGEE-II, SEE-GRID-2, ICEAGE and CoreGrid FP6 projects. It was also member in the GridCoord projects.
MTA SZTAKI plays a leading role in Grid Computing in Hungary. MTA SZTAKI participated in the vast majority of Hungarian Grid projects (DemoGrid, ClusterGrid, SuperGrid, Chemistry Grid, Hungarian Grid, SuperClusterGrid, etc.) and led several of them. Perdana University Centre for Bioinformatics (PU-CBi) was established in June 2014. The mission of the Centre is to help promote and develop bioinformatics education, research and services excellence in Malaysia. The Centre aims to merge bioinformatics-led innovation with applied clinical and epidemiologic research efforts to address some of the most pressing medical challenges. This includes a commitment to provide education and training to support the development and continuity of in-house programmes, in particular to advance the translational bioinformatics skills of the next generation doctors and clinician scientists being trained at the two medical schools of Perdana University.
Rechenkraft.net e.V. is world-wide the first and so far only officially registered non-governmental organization founded by volunteer computing enthusiasts to support distributed and grid computing. With over ten years of practical experience in supporting, developing and maintenance of distributed computing projects, Rechenkraft.net e.V. unifies layman people as well as specialists in a versatile, multifaceted community to demonstrate the power and creativity of cooperative efforts in tackling apparently intractable scientific problems. Rechenkraft.net e.V. is a charitable, non-profit organization with international members that is located in Germany and, among many other activities, currently operates the RNA World distributed supercomputer, the Yoyo@home umbrella project and actively helps establishing the aerospace project Constellation. Our goal is to help solve scientific problems by (1) offering practical know-how required for setting up distributed computing projects, (2) recruiting volunteer compute resources and (3) supplying educational background information in a format understandable by anyone. We are convinced that the combined computing capabilities of home computers by far outperform any supercomputer that has operated on this planet so far and these mainly idle resources we aim to recruit for the good of science.

The UFCG was funded in 1952 and currently operates in 6 different cities in the Paraíba state of the Brazilian North-eastern region. It is structured in 28 departments organized in 8 centres, and has around 12,000 students enrolled. In particular, the Electrical Engineering and Informatics Centre has around 1,200 students enrolled in the undergraduate courses in Electrical Engineering and in Computer Science, and around 150 students enrolled in the graduate courses (Master and Doctorate) in Electrical Engineering and in Computer Science. Both the undergraduate and the graduate courses are among the best courses in the country, according to the Brazilian Ministry of Education. UFCG is involved in many research and development projects, some of them
involving international cooperations. These R&D activities are managed by UFCG’s support agency Fundação Parque Tecnológico da Paraíba (PaqTc-PB).

BIRUNI Grid's mission is to create an e-infrastructure to support the project that benefits everyone, especially Malaysia and UPM academia. BIRUNI Grid has developed the technical infrastructure that serves as the grid foundation for scientific research other than facilitate the familiarization and deployment of GRID best-practise and take the lead in activities aimed to ensure high percentage of use, acculturation and awareness. BIRUNI Grid also actively involved in many international grid computing communities such as the EUAsiaGrid, APGridPMA, and IDGF.

High-Performance Computing (HPC) Service Center, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), is a service center that provides computing services for high-end engineering and the physical sciences. The mission of the HPC Service Center is to develop, promote and facilitate the use of HPC environments in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) to address problems in the engineering and physical sciences fields. The objectives are to:
- encourage the use of cutting edge computational techniques in engineering research.
- develop expertise and facilities for developing HPC-based solutions to engineering problems that could not otherwise be resolved.

The University of Coimbra in Portugal is one of the oldest in Europe, having been founded in 1290. It has nearly 20.000 students, of which 9.000 are in the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCTUC). FCTUC is represented in the project by the Software and Systems Engineering (SSE) group, which is part of the Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra (CISUC). One of the main areas of activity of SSE has been the development of tools for parallel programming, mainly programming support libraries, like the porting of PVM and MPI for Windows 32-bit, and portable libraries for specific paradigms of parallel programming, like master- slave, GRID-decomposition, DSM and Linda. The implementation of MPI for Windows was the world first and is now a full fledged commercial offering from Critical Software. In FP7, the SSE group has participated in the EDGeS project - "Enabling Desktop Grids for e-Science" (Contract Nbr. RI-211727), where it was responsible for the Monitoring and benchmarking activities.
The Niels Bohr Institute (NBI) is the physics institute of the University of Copenhagen - the largest university in Denmark. The NBI is involved in many areas of physics and related sciences and has been active in Grid computing since the year 2000 where the high energy physics group joined the CERN led European Data Grid. The NBI is one of the founding partners of NorduGrid and actively involved in ARC development. More recently, the NBI has participated in the EU funded projects EGEE, EGEE2 and KnowARC. Currently, the NBI is carrying out research on the application of virtualization technologies in scientific computing in connection with the national Grid initiative.
Established in 1975 as a division of the Third Development Plan by the Federal Government of Nigeria, the University of Maiduguri is located in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in the north-eastern corner of Nigeria. The contiguity of the state's boundaries with those of three countries, Cameroun, Chad and Niger, has ensured constant trans-border human traffic to Maiduguri for purposes of trade, study and settlement. The university now boasts over 25 000 students from around the world, specialized centres and units, a College of Medicine and eight faculties. This international presence, when added to the attraction Maiduguri has for Nigerians, makes the city quite cosmopolitan.The autochthonous and majority population in the city are the Kanuris.
Maiduguri is served by an airport, which places it one hour away from Nigeria's capital, Abuja, and two hours away from the commercial centre of Lagos. A network of Federal and State roads places such other Nigerian cities as Kano, Jos and Yola some 5-6 hours away. The University is residential for both staff and students, although privately arranged off-campus accommodation is increasingly being resorted to as a result of the increase in staff and student population. Students come from information technology schools around the globe including London and France. Municipal services provided on campus include banks, clinic, post-office, retail outlets, pharmacy and schools (nursery, primary and secondary).
Several recreational facilities exist for the community on campus: sporting arenas (with provision for soccer, basketball, etc.), the Senior Staff Club (which also has squash and lawn-tennis courts), the "Love Garden" (ideal for picnics, walks). University of Paderborn will bring in expertise acquired at the Paderborn Centre for Parallel Computing (PC2), which was founded in 1991 as an interdisciplinary institute at UPB. Since then, PC2 has become a well known competence centre for parallel and distributed computing. In 1996, PC2 was co-founder of the meta-computing initiative and brought this expertise into the application-driven EC projects PHASE (ESPRIT-23486), MICA (ESPRIT-20966), and DYNAMITE (ESPRIT- 23499). Furthermore, PC2 became part of the large UNICORE and UNICORE plus projects funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). PC2 participated in the European research projects GRIDLAB (IST-2001-32133), UP-TV (ISF1999-20751), HPC4U (IST-
511531, technical manager), DELIS (IST-001907), and Assess Grid (IST-031772) and in the Collaborative Research Centre "Massive Parallelism" supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Currently, PC2 is partner in the EU projects HYDRA (IST-034891) and ONELAB2 (IST-224263) and is coordinator of the FP 7 Marie Curie Initial Training School (MCITN) SCALUS.

The University of Westminster's Centre for Parallel Computing (CPC) is focused on research and application of distributed and parallel computation technologies. CPC is engaged in research on Grid computing including its Web services-oriented approach based on OGSA/WSRF platforms. CPC was involved in the "OGSI Testbed" e-Science project to evaluate the OGSI platform and its GT3 implementation on a UK multi-site testbed. Within the framework of the project the research team developed the Grid Execution Management for Legacy Code Applications (GEMLCA). GEMLCA supports migrating legacy code applications to the Grid using legacy code as Grid compliant Grid service. Users can either access pre-defined Grid services through a Grid portal or dynamically create and deploy new Grid services.
The current research activities of CPC cover both computational and desktop Grid, for example: automatic service deployment, Grid registries and repositories, interoperability in Grid computing, service-oriented approach in desktop Grids, performance management, workflow design and its execution in Grid, development of Grid user environments to support both design and execution of Grid-based applications. CPC has installed and runs a BOINC-based Westminster desktop Grid in 2006 using 500 computers as workers. The desktop Grid has 35 registered users and runs the DSP sampling frequency calculation project. Currently, we are working on migrating two projects – health service data mining and image rendering- to the desktop Grid.
BIFI leads Ibercivis project, a volunteer computing and dissemination initiative with more than 2000 CPUs connected everyday from all over the world. Since the public announcement in June 2008, Ibercivis has achieved more than 15.000 volunteer working for the scientific applications running in this project. This project has deployed several developments oriented to the improved usage of the resources from the point of view of the scientific users. As a result, eight different applications are running concurrently at this moment in the infrastructure from several scientific communities like Fusion, Protein Docking, Complex Materials, etc.
This project represents also a successful effort in science dissemination because all the machines connected (up to 10.000 cores connected daily from a total of 60.000 cores available) are machines located in the home of the volunteers as no private, corporative or public computer networks are involved yet.
The Institute of Cybernetics (IC) was established in 1960 within the Division of Applied Mechanics and Control Processes of the Georgian Academy of Sciences and until today counts to the most prominent Georgian research institutes in the priority area of information technologies. The Institute consists of 7 Departments (and 2 independent laboratories with department status) employing about 90 scientists with Dr.Sc. and PhD degrees.
Main areas of expertise are problems of informatics, complex information processing, quantum computations, automated systems of pattern recognition, fuzzy logic, methods of modeling and prediction of stochastic processes, artificial neural networks, photo-physical effects in photonics and quantum optics, optical and photo-electrical properties of nano-structures, and optical chemistry.
IC has been actively engaged in international research exchange and collaborations. International scientific contacts include Technical University, Berlin; Karlsruhe University's Institute of Applied Physics; Lebedev Institute of Physics; Napoli University's Mathematical Institute; University of Calabria; Oxford University's Mathematical Institute; Israeli Weizmann Institute of Science. Several projects have been supported by the ISTC, STCU, CRDF, GNSF, etc.
